Marine awareness and the STCW

The standards of education for seafarers are set out in the STCW Code, the Standards of Training, Certification & Watchkeeping code from the IMO, the International Maritime Organization.  ProSea believes its ultimate goal of ecologically sound oceans will be best achieved if marine awareness becomes an integral part of all seafarers’ education. Since 2007 the IMO has been working on a revision of the STCW code.  ProSea is cooperating with the Dutch government to include marine awareness training as an integral part of a seafarers training and competence in this revised IMO STCW code. The Dutch government has taken the initiative to promote the inclusion of Marine Environmental Awareness and has had support from the European Commission and its countries.

Marine Mammal Observation Pack

ProSea is developing a Marine Mammal Observation Pack with information on marine mammals, the impacts of shipping on these marine mammals and current shipping regulations connected to marine mammals.  ProSea is developing this CD-ROM for BP Shipping to offer their seafarers a tool to observe marine mammals, to get acquainted with the environment they are sailing on, to raise awareness of ship strikes, and noise and vibration impacts on marine mammals, and to give an overview of current legislation on ship strike, noise and vibration impacts on marine mammals. ProSea is convinced that the development of this attractive pack, with pictures, maps and illustrations of marine mammals will cause seafarers to be more connected to mammal life in the ocean and, ultimately, more interested in reducing the impact that shipping has on these mammals.

Marine Awareness DVD

Together with Sabella Productions, USA, ProSea is developing a Marine Awareness DVD for the BP fleet to raise awareness of the key environmental impacts of shipping on the marine environment, to highlight BP Shipping’s core values and expectations for officers and crew onboard BP Shipping vessels, and, ultimately, to help change the culture and behavior toward the environment.

Educational material for shipping academies

Shipping academies in the Netherlands recognize that environmental knowledge is an important part of the education of seafarers. In 2006, the Shipping and Transport College (STC) took the initiative to develop background environmental material for all the Dutch Shipping academies that complemented the marine awareness courses that ProSea had been providing. ProSea contributed to this project as an expert on the topic and wrote the materials on environmental challenges for shipping.

Symposium – International marine awareness

In 2005 ProSea and KIMO International organized a symposium on international marine awareness in Rotterdam, Netherlands.  The goal of the symposium was to draw the attention of the international maritime world to the importance of marine awareness for achieving sustainability in the maritime industries.  A resolution, agreed to by all delegates, was written and published.

Incident response workshop

ProSea developed an incident response workshop for coastal communities in 2004.  In an emergency on the coast many different organizations need to cooperate.  Often, it is not clear which organizations are involved, what each organization’s responsibilities are, who needs to communicate with whom and when all this needs to happen.  ProSea provides a course in which coastal communities learn which organizations need to be involved and learn what the communication lines need to be, and can practice with several realistic cases.
