Fishing with a Future – sustainable fishing course

ProSea provides this four day course in Dutch for fishing schools in the Netherlands.  The course deals with 3 overarching issues: how does the sea work, what are the effects of (ir)responsible fishing, and what does responsible fishing include.  ProSea weaves these issues through the course content which includes sustainable fishing, fishing management, societal acceptance, fishery economics, environmental impacts of fishing, and communication.

This course has become part of the educational program of every Dutch fishing school.  Currently ProSea is working with the fishing sector to update the school’s educational material and to include sustainable fishing directly in the curriculum.

Preparatory Fishing with a Future – for teachers

ProSea provided this course in Dutch.  The course was developed in connection with Fishing with a Future – sustainable fishing course.  ProSea presented an introductory version of Fishing with a Future to the teachers from the fishing colleges to test the viability of the course, provide teachers with advance information and stimulate teacher involvement in the course program later that school year.

Program for active fishermen

ProSea provided a set of courses on sustainable fishing for the two Dutch fishermen union's officers and leaders. The course contained general information on sustainable fishing and how sustainable fishing is important for an individual fisherman.  The purpose was to contribute to the promotion of sustainable fishing and to see if the sector would be willing to continue the sustainable fishing course program in the future.

The answer was yes.  The participants especially appreciated the presentations and activities on fishery management and policy, fishery economics, societal acceptance, communication and the exchange with colleagues.

Currently the EU, through its member states, is attempting to compel the fishing sector to make a transition to sustainable fishing.  ProSea, in cooperation with the fishing sector, has entered a sustainable fishing project proposal under that program to create a special set of courses on marine awareness for active fishermen.
